The sign of Gemini is also known in Vedic Astrology as Mithuna. It represents the sign of duality and its zodiac element is air.
Western Astrology depicts the sign of Gemini as twins, specifically the dioscuri. These are the twin half-brothers in Greek and Roman mythology, known as Castor and Pollux. In Vedic Astrology, the sign of Gemini is represented as a couple of different sexes. One of these people has a mallet in his hand and the other a harp or a lute.

Now that we know what the Gemini zodiac sign represents, let’s dive into its important aspects.
Characteristics of Geminis
Have you ever wondered why knowing this symbolism is important? It is important because it helps us understand the characteristics of a sign. When you imagine a couple holding one of them a mallet and the other a harp, you think of the different nature of these objects, the differences between the couple, one is female and the other male. We could say that the male twin with the mallet represents Mars, and the female twin with the harp represents Venus. In this way the behavior of a Gemini can seem contradictory many times, they can change their ideas frequently, it could also indicate that they can do two or more things at the same time.
Gemini is the third sign of the natural zodiac. It therefore gives the sign of Gemini characteristics associated with the 3rd house, such as having many interests and different abilities. They have great energy and are constantly looking for change.
Each sign also has a specific place. We will locate the couple representing Gemini in a playhouse, a park or a garden. These are places where pleasures are sought. This tells us that Geminis will be stimulus seekers.

The sign of Gemini rises with its head, resides in the West and its element is air. It is biped, strong at night, resides in the villas and is windy in temperament, it has a balanced body and its hue is the green of the grass, it is ruled by Mercury.

Gemini Is Ruled by Mercury
Mercury is the ruling planet for Gemini. In Vedic Astrology, Mercury is described as a planet with an attractive psyche and the ability to speak words with many meanings or play word games, as well as having a great sense of humor. Mercury contains the three doshas: Vata, Pitta and Kapha.
Mercury is the karaka or the planet that represents speech or communication. Geminis have an innate ability to express themselves in words. Some examples in history include:
- Pope Benedict XVI
- Leo Tolstoy
- J.R. Tolkien
- Voltaire
- Virginia Woolf

Geminis are talented communicators and they don’t particularly strive for brevity when they share their thoughts and feelings. They can chat for hours about almost anything. Consequently, they are not the best listeners. In many instances, they are simply being courteous and waiting for the opportunity to continue talking.
How Does the Moon Affect Gemini?
The Moon is the ruler of Cancer, which for Gemini is the 2nd house. The 2nd house is related to speech and the spoken word, so its ruler, together with Mercury, represents for Gemini what is related to communication.
This is why Geminis can be very kind with their words. The Moon represents emotions, subtleties and tenderness. But because the Moon is the most changeable planet of all, what a Gemini speaks can get them in trouble on some occasions.
These problems related to changeable or inconsistent speech occur because the Moon is debilitated in Scorpio, which is the 6th house for Gemini, the house of arguments, fights and enemies.
The Moon represents a value system for the Gemini ascendant in the 2nd house, and they must adhere to it. Failure to do so could incur debt or cause them to have enemies, due to debilitation of the Moon in the 6th house.
Geminis Like to Socialize
Probably the most attractive quality of Geminis is that they have a great sense of humor. They will always be the life of the party. They like to socialize and don’t take themselves too seriously. They are often clowns and comedians.
They can be an amazing friend to have. Although Geminis tend to have a lot of friends and their schedule is very busy, when they are with you, you are the only one that matters to them.
In general, Geminis are resourceful and friendly. Sometimes they are artists, inventors, and scientists. Some examples Gemini ascendants in history include:

Gemini Experiences Difficulties in Making Decisions
On the other hand, Geminis are very indecisive. They have a hard time choosing a position and keeping it. They ask for help freely, but this can lead to a feeling of being overwhelmed and further hamper their decision-making. Although they are rational and logical, these things can also cause decision overload in the Gemini ascendant. They have a tendency to overanalyze even simple situations, which leads them to not commit to anything.
They can also be nervous, restless, and agitated. They must take care of this, as they are prone to anxiety and neurotic behaviors.
Overall, the Gemini ascendant is a lucky sign, as it only has two functional malefic planets which are Rahu and Ketu. So Geminis often can enjoy calm and prosperous lifetimes.
Gemini and Health in Vedic Astrology
The Sun is the determinant of health for Gemini. If it is strong and the Rahu and Ketu nodes do not cause affliction on the houses or planets, then the health of the Gemini is generally good.
Parts of the body that correspond to the sign of Gemini are the respiratory and nervous system, ears, lower part of the neck, bronchi, shoulders, arms, forearms, and hands.
Health conditions in Geminis usually are related to mixed disorders of the Vata, Pitta or Kapha type, since the planet Mercury contains all three humors. In this way, a Gemini person can have diseases related to increased phlegm, such as frequent colds or sinusitis, and, at the same time, they could have constipation or gastritis.
Because they are easily stimulated, the Gemini nervous system is prone to nervousness and anxieties. If the Moon or Mercury are weak, there might have stuttering or language disorders.
Geminis could be vulnerable to health problems during the months of November and December, due to the transit of the Sun in the 6th house (Scorpio). This transit of the Sun through Scorpio is closely accompanied by the transit of Mercury and Venus.
Gemini and Love in Vedic Astrology
The house of relationships for the Gemini ascendant corresponds to the sign Sagittarius (7th house). Therefore, Geminis will look for a way to grow in a relationship with you, to find in the love relationship the convictions that may be needed for it to succeed and in which ways they can learn from you. This is because Jupiter, the planet that represents expansion and wisdom, is the ruler of Sagittarius.
Jupiter is the determining planet of the love relationship for Gemini. If Jupiter has a good position in the natal chart and is not afflicted, your love relationships can be full of harmony.
This sign is the most changeable in the zodiac due to its air element and other characteristics that represent it.
There is a belief among some people that Geminis are fickle in love, that they can be unfaithful, and that they change partners easily. This perception may be associated with the ease with which Geminis can change their ideas or direction.
Gemini Ss an Air Element Sign
Along with Libra and Aquarius, Gemini is an air element sign. This is what makes Gemini very related to creative ideas or thinking.
Mercury rules Gemini and is the planet of intelligence. Mercury also rules Virgo. However Virgo has a way of anchoring itself, or being more stable, because it has earth as its element, unlike Gemini.
Gemini’s Modality Is Dual
The modality of Gemini is dual. This means that it is very easy for Geminis to initiate things, or to decide to remain and perfect them. It is a male sign, which signifies that it tends to look to outside factors for reasons to explain occurrences in its life. This is also demonstrated by Mercury, which is the planet in charge of ordering external stimuli to inform decisions.
As you can see from several of the attributes associated with this sign, Geminis tend to have over stimulation from outside factors. This leads them to be superficial in their decision making process, which in turn gives them an inclination to make quick choices or to rapidly change course. This frequently can cause a sense of uneasiness among others and leave them in a state of bewilderment.
A few years ago, I had a friend that was a Gemini ascendant. He played football (soccer) in a community amateur league that had their games on Saturdays. One day he failed to show up for practice. His teammates assumed he was sick and didn’t pay much attention to his absence. However, when he did not appear for their Saturday game, they grew concerned. They stopped by his residence after their game (which they lost) to check on him, only to find out that he was playing for another team in a different league! It apparently never occurred to him that he had an obligation to inform his teammates of that decision. He lost friends as a result.
This is a classic example of the tendency that Geminis have to make snap decisions without considering the consequences.
Sagittarius Is the Contrary Sign of Gemini
Geminis may have a tendency to lack wisdom and conviction. This is indicated by Jupiter ruling the 7th house (Sagittarius) of Gemini. Sagittarius is the contrary sign for Gemini. Contrary signs have one or more virtues that the ascendant sign (in this case, Gemini) lack and that need to be developed in their life.
Developing wisdom and a sense of conviction for Geminis can be accomplished through introspection. Acquired values from Sagittarius are fundamental for this purpose. For the planet Jupiter that represents wisdom not only rules Sagittarius, it is exalted in the 2nd house (Cancer) for this ascendant, the house related to correct or ethical actions, the value system, and self-esteem.
Geminis will find personal growth in relationships with others, in love relationships, and in their profession. Showing the best of themselves in these areas – performing the right actions and enhancing self-esteem – will lead them to higher levels of consciousness. On the other hand, if the opposite happens, and they give free rein to the satisfaction of desires or search for external stimuli, Geminis could suffer more internal conflicts.
Career Paths of Geminis
Geminis have excellent speech and communication skills. They are people who seek change, exchange, movement and invention.
They have a sharp intellect. They are analytical, with teaching skills. They are very adaptable. They are also very energetic and have many ideas. They like to start projects, but they are not particularly good at following through and finishing them.
Depending on the influences in the ascendant, the 2nd house (Cancer) and the 10th house (Pisces), professions that Geminis tend to pursue are related to the following:

Final Considerations
We have learned many things about the Gemini zodiac sign. They are gentle, loving, curious, and adaptable people. They also have the ability to learn quickly and exchange ideas.
At the same time, they tend to be nervous, inconsistent, and indecisive. They do not like repetition and routine, being alone, or being confined.
It is clear that Gemini really is the sign of duality.
